101 Things To Do In 1001 Days

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.

The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past – frequently simple goals such as New Year’s resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organizing and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.

Some common goal setting tips:
1. Be decisive. Know exactly what you want, why you want it, and how you plan to achieve it.
2. Stay Focused. Any goal requires sustained focus from beginning to end. Constantly evaluate your progress.
3. Welcome Failure. Frequently, very little is learned from a venture that did not experience failure in some form. Failure presents the opportunity to learn and makes the success more worthy.
4. Write down your goals. It clarifies your thinking and reinforces your commitment.
5. Keep your goals in sight. Review them frequently, and ensure that they are always at the forefront of your thinking.

6 weird things about me

1. I don’t like crunchy food mixed into soft food (like celery in tuna salad) and I don’t like ice in my beverages (because it touches me when I drink).

2. I keep my hair up because it makes me crazy when it brushes against my face.

3. I like playing AD&D. A lot. Anyone wanna play?

4. My pants need to be about 2 inches too long.

5. Up until a few years ago, I would keep any letter anyone ever sent me.

6. I am allergic to perfume and rose hips. I don’t drink caffeine; I used to tell people I was allergic to it because it seemed easier but it’s not true. Now I try never to lie but there are strange, unexpected grey areas that give me trouble.

7. I can’t think of anyone to tag.

Happy Holidays

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Hot chocolate! And no marshmallows; I do not like their insulation effect.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just set them under the tree? Oh, trick question. Santa is a nice story but he hasn’t ever broken into this house. And our presents are usually wrapped. I have been reconsidering this, though. My mom-in-law gave the little bee some gifts in cute felt bags with her name on them and I think we will reuse them this year.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? It varies but usually white.

4. Do you hang mistletoe? Nope.

5. When do you put your decorations up? This has been the source of negotiations over the years. The husband seems to be afraid of the holidays and would be very happy if we ignored them. I really like the holidays (though, admittedly less so since living with the grinch but definitely because of the discord). We have compromised by agreeing to put the tree up Christmas eve and taking it down New Year’s day. I put out a few other things earlier in December, like the advent tree.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish? I enjoy the process of roasting a turkey (and I like to eat it) but a crown roast is delicious.

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? Driving around at night and looking at the holiday lights.

8 . When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I was much older than usual (maybe 8 or 9?) and pretty trusting so I never questioned it.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? We used to but now we visit relatives on Christmas Eve. I like opening them up on Christmas Eve because it relieves so much of the stress and tension.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? A mix of different kinds of ornaments. Glass globes, figures, a few handmade ornaments I made when I was a kid, a string of silver beads for garland (from when we had pets and tinsel was too dangerous).

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? Love it.

12. Can you ice skate? I could when I was young. I haven’t been skating in a long time.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? I received a Richard Scarry play farm set when I was too old for it but I loved it so much. The figures were die-cut card stock and fit into a grid base of plastic. There were little tomato plants.

14. What’s your favorite thing(s) about the holidays? Getting out and seeing all the other-worldly decorations and tableaux and villages that pop up everywhere.

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert? Well, if it’s cookies: pfeffernusse . If it’s pie: pumpkin.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? I don’t really know.

17. What tops your tree? An angel

18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? Giving, when it’s really thoughtful.

19. What is your favorite Christmas song? This year it’s “The Wren In The Furze” as performed by The Chieftains. Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song” is great, too.

20. What is your favorite holiday book? David Sedaris’ Holidays on Ice is pretty awesome.

21. Candy canes yuck or yum? Meh.

21. What’s number one on your Christmas list this year? Have a nice, peaceful day (in spite of the construction in the house and the stressed-out husband. Here, Johnny, have some eggnog.)
